In its second year, the Engwalls Corn Maze in Hermantown will be almost double its previous size when it opens on Friday, August 26, according to Tracy Lundeen, Corn Maze partner. “Corn Maze guests will be able to walk almost a linear mile on all the maze paths and dead ends ,” Lundeen said in a release. “An all new design with new trivia and scavenger games make it an entirely new experience this year.”
Organizers say a second field on the Engwalls property was cleared, soil tested and prepared for corn during April to increase the size. Overall, the field is close to 100,000 square feet. There is also a smaller sunflower maze to provide some color contrast.
Local non-profit organizations will be participating and receiving financial support during the 2011 Corn Maze season. Animal Allies, Boys & Girls Club of Duluth and Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank will receive a dollar from each full price admission paid on 3 weekends in September. This is made possible through Corn Maze corporate partner, maurices. In October, Just Kids Dental and Coats for Kids will be featured through corporate partner, Benna Ford.
As in 2010, area elementary students have been invited for field trips to the maze. With a teacher, the students participate in an educational curriculum, “Caring for our Soils, Sustainability and Growing Vegetables.” Each student plants two corn seeds to take back to school and watch grow. Their visit is concluded with a walk through the maze. The education program is sponsored by the Duluth Teachers Credit Union. Class times are still available and can be reserved by calling 727.8961.
The 2nd Corn Maze Festival will be expanded to two days, October 1 & 2. Highlights include music, entertainment vendors, crafts and family games.
The Corn Maze will be open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through October 30. During October, evening flashlight tours are available. Corn Maze admission is $7 per person and group rates are also available.
